I can…
- List the characteristics of viruses and state reasons why viruses are considered to be nonliving
- Describe the components of the basic structure of a virus
- Explain how active and hidden viruses multiply
Learning targets Bacteria:
I can…
- Name and describe structures, shapes and sizes of a bacterial cell
- Compare the characteristics of autotrophs and heterotrophs
- Contrast asexual and sexual methods of bacterial reproduction
- Explain the roles of bacteria in the environment
Learning targets for Webquest
I can…
- Research the history, symptoms, transmission methods, and treatment of an infectious disease (either bacterial or viral) using the provided internet sources and all links provided in this quest.
- Present my findings in a google presentation, using the rubric as my guide, and include 5 questions that students should be able to answer from viewing my presentation.
- Share my presentation with Mr. Dutton via google docs.

"Ring around the Roses
Pocket full of posies
Ashes Ashes
We all fall down...."
|
"Ring around the roses" was not always so harmless; it deals with one of the grim periods of English medical history. At the time of the Black Plague in England the first signs of a victim was a ring of red rash around the neck (roseola). As the disease progressed there was a horrible body stench which was combatted by filling the pockets of the victim with sweet-smelling flowers. Eventually those so stricken would "all fall down" -- dead!
In this quest you will investigate a communicable disease and present your findings as a power point presentation to the class.
Process
1. First, you will need to choose a disease from the list of diseases. In order to prevent everyone doing the same disease in the class, there will be a sign up sheet, when you have decided, sign your name next to the disease. Diseases will be chosen on a first come first serve basis. Do not worry at this point if you don't know much about the disease, the point of this quest is to learn about it.
2. Once you've decided on your disease, you will need to research that disease. I would suggest using your notebook to write down notes about your disease. Some questions to think about while you're searching are included below. The ultimate goal is to create a google presentation to inform the class about the disease.
- How does a person contract this disease? (Method of Transmission)
- What are the symptoms of the disease? (Symptoms)
- Is there a cure or a vaccine? What other ways can you prevent getting the disease?
- What is a person's chances of survival if they have contracted the disease? (Mortality Rate)
- How does a doctor diagnose the disease? Will blood be drawn or other tests conducted?
- How long will the patient remain sick? Is there a treatment to ease symptoms?
Sample Outline
- I. Name and history of the disease
II. Method of transmission
III. Symptoms
IV. Treatment or Cure / Prevention
V. Mortality rate
VI. Organizations

3. Class Evaluation
At the completion of your presentation, you will submit a 5 question multiple choice quiz. The quiz should be straightforward and include only information that you presented. This quiz must be one your slides of your presentation.

How Disease was Transmitted | Research explains a very complete, detailed history of how people can “catch” this disease. | Research mentions a history of this disease and how people can “catch” this disease. | Research shows minimal evidence how people can “catch this disease | Transmission of disease is not mentioned. |
Symptoms of Disease | Research explains the symptoms in a very detailed and complete way | Research mentions the symptoms of the disease | Research shows minimal evidence of the symptoms | Symptoms of disease are not mentioned |
Treatment/Cure/Prevention Mortality rate of Disease | Research explains each in a very complete and detailed manner | Research mentions each but does not elaborate on each. | Research shows minimal evidence of each or only an explanation of one of the targets | Research does not show evidence of the targets |

Conclusion
At the end of this quest, you should be "experts" in the disease you studied. You will know how the disease is passed from person to person, how a person can prevent getting the disease, and what treatments are available to those who contract it. You will also be aware of the history of the disease.
